Parent FAQs

  • WHY SHOULD YOUR SON JOIN A FRATERNITY?
Greek grades are consistently higher! Greek graduation rates are higher, both four-year and six-year rates!  Greeks comprise the majority of the campus leadership positions!  Greeks are extremely involved in UMD's Homecoming celebration and Spring Fling!  Greek alumni continue to be generous donors to the University after graduation.

    COLLEGE ORGANIZATION?

Coming to college is one of the major life changes that your son will go through.  Joining AGR can help make that transition easier.  Developing life long friendships, with other members helps make a campus smaller.  For many members, AGR truly become home away from home.  In addition to Brotherhood, AGR promotes the values of scholarship, philanthropy and financial responsibility.

HOW WILL AGR BENEFIT MY SON AFTER COLLEGE?
Membership in AGR is a lifetime commitment.  Joining now is an investment in your sons' future.  Wherever a Brother ends up after college, chances are that he will be able to find alumni from UMD or other AGR Chapters that are willing to help him adjust to his post-collegiate life.  AGR has a national network of members that can assist your son when looking for a new job as well.

    HOW MUCH TIME IS REQUIRED?
The time commitment varies by member.  The time spent with AGR will give your son the opportunity to develop their leadership and time management skills, learn about the history of the organization, develop friendships and allow them to be involved with other organizations.  Weekly meetings and Chapter activities are planned well in advance allowing ample time to arrange schedules.  Remember, the more that your son puts into AGR, the more that he will benefit.

IS AGR PRIMARILY SOCIAL IN NATURE?
There is a social aspect to AGR and these "social events" include: educational programs, leadership seminars, workshops, community service events, intramural sports, Parents Day, Homecoming, dinner exchanges as well as formals and socials.  Today's Greek organizations have adopted strict rules regarding alcohol consumption at social events thereby creating a safer, more beneficial environment for members.   Rules of the University, governing council and National standards are all enforced, in addition AGR sponsors education on alcohol misuse and abuse.

WHAT IS MY ROLE AS A PARENT?
Take time to find out more about AGR and the Greek community at UMD.  Ask questions about what is happening at AGR and what your son is doing.  Allow your son to make decisions that are best for him and check out any information that your son receives related to Greek Life or AGR.  Once your son becomes a Brother of Alpha Gamma Rho, there are opportunities for you to participate in the Mom’s Club with our Housemother as well as family events each fall and spring.  The key is to be active in your son’s decision and support him in what he wishes to accomplish.
